What is Chat Anywhere?
Chat Anywhere is a pure web-based chat server for real-time chatting,
you can use it both on a LAN and on the internet. you can build
one or more web-based chat rooms on your computer. Anyone on the
network can chat in your chat room via an internet browser(Internet
Explorer / Firefox / etc.), no matter where they are and everyone
needn't install any client software. |
Do I need to install IIS or Apache first?
No Chat Anywhere can run individually and you needn't install any
HTTP server(IIS/Apache/Pws/Tomcat/etc) on your computer. |
I have a dynamic IP address
and the last 3 numbers change everytime I connect via dialup, Is
there a solution for it?
When you dial-up to Internet, or otherwise, usually you will get
a dynamic IP address from ISP. It means that each time you connect
to your Internet Service Provider your computer usually gets assigned
a different IP address. Actually you can use a domain name to instead
of your IP address. There are some software that can associate a
domain name to your dynamic IP address. Such as DNS2Go,
No-IP DUC, DynSite. |
How many people could chat at
a time?
It depends on the CPU, the RAM, the bandwidth of your internet connection,
the sockets capabilities of operating system.
1) CPU and RAM: A PII 300 CPU and 64M RAM is enough for your
chat room.
2) Bandwidth:
Bandwidth = (amount of chatter) X (data, sent to each chatter
per second)
For example, if you want to allow 150 people to chat in your chat
room at a time, and suppose that the chat server sends 1KB data
to each chatter per second. Then the bandwidth of your chat server
should be at least 150X1=150KB/s.
3) Operating system:
Windows NT/2000/XP can handle a lot more parallel sockets than windows
95/98. So if Chat Anywhere is running on Windows NT/2000/XP, the
chatroom is able to allow more people inside it. For example, if
the chat room runs on a windows 98 system, it could allow 100 people
inside it. If it runs on NT/2000/XP, it could allow 400 people inside
it.

If chat anywhere can be installed behind a gateway
router?
Yes. But your router must support DMZ and Virtual Server, at least
it should be able to forward port.
* Virtual Server:
Allows WWW, FTP and other Internet server services on the LAN to
be accessible to Internet users.
* DMZ:
The DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) host feature provides unrestricted
2-way communication between Internet servers and one specified local
machine.
If the computer's INTERNAL IP is 192.168.0.2, tell your router or
gateway to set this address as the DMZ and set a virtual server
to port 80 (suppose that you set port 80 for Chat Anywhere) at this
address, then people outside can access your files. But you can't
tell 192.168.0.2 to your friends directly because it is a LAN IP
address. You should tell an internet IP address to your friends
so they can access your chat room on the internet. To find the internet
IP address, please visit:
